The Luke Tradition: Poor Lives Matter

Retreat Description: Luke's gospel and Acts of the Apostles present Jesus as the Lord of the universe. The infancy narrative sets the time for the gospel and Acts; it's like a prelude that shows us what to look for: Christ is the new Adam the Lord of the universe and of all mankind's history. Luke reminds us of the book of Deuteronomy, which repeatedly declares that God id a God of the widow, the orphan, and the alien. Luke shows how the Lord reaches out to the poor and the 'insignificant people'. Therefore, he is the true Lord, not the kind of lord the Emperors of his time claimed to be. We will explore how in the gospel and in Acts Jesus and the disciples journey to Jerusalem where Jesus' mission gets validated and continue toward Rome where Christ and his message reach the 'ends of the earth'. In addition we reflect on how the Jesus of the Luke tradition challenges us to pay attention close attention to the marginalized in our society.
Presenter: Tony Verhallen is a retired high school teacher. He earned his MA in Theology from St. Mary's College, Moraga, CA, and his MA in History from California State University, Long Beach, CA. He taught Scripture, Ethics, and Church History at Pius X High School in Downey, St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, and Servite High School in Anaheim. He volunteers for the Western Service Workers Association, an organization that assists low income families and weekly conducts discussions and reflections on the Scriptures at St. Boniface parish in Anaheim.
